Juniper produces a wide range of routing, switching, and security products, all based on a unified software platform called JunOS.

Fortunately for Zenoss Core users, the unified JunOS software platform, in combination with the Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack, makes monitoring Juniper devices easy!

The Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack is authored and maintained by Jane Curry, Zenoss Master. This article provides additional information about the Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack and how you can use this ZenPack to monitor your various Juniper devices.

Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack Overview

Jane Curry is the author of quite a few ZenPacks, but her Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack fills a much needed void in the Community. The Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches ZenPack supports:

  • M and MX series routers
  • EX high-performance switches
  • Enterprise and branch SRX models

With this ZenPack, you can configure monitoring for an entire, complex Juniper network/internetwork deployment with a few hours of work, not days of configuration.

Monitoring Capabilities Included in the Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches Community ZenPack

First and foremost, Jane’s Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches ZenPack extensively utilizes the BGP portion of Juniper’s JuniperBGP MIB. Each BGP session has the corresponding peer IP and ASN, as well as uptime, status. Per-session events are sent based on BGP status.

If you are running the Juniper MX, this ZenPack enumerates FPCs, the utilization level on the FPC, and installed PICs. It also captures serial numbers and other asset tracking information. Thus, even if your PIC is installed in an FPC, it’s still fully supported!

If you are monitoring an EX series switch, VLAN and VLAN utilization information is broken out, allowing you to see port assignments, status, and eventing on failures. This greatly reduces the time to diagnose a failure in a complex campus switching environment, as well as increases transparency and visibility into your VLAN topology.

The ZenPack also breaks out hardware such as power supplies, fans, filesystems, RE’s, and other useful information such as IPSEC Security Policy counts, and generates suitable events when something changes.

Additional Information About Jane

Jane Curry, the author of the Juniper Routers/Firewalls/Switches ZenPack (ZenPack.ZenSystems.Juniper) is a Principal Consultant at Skills 1st, which specializes in Zenoss and monitoring in the UK. Per conversation with Jane, Skills 1st is made up of Jane and her husband, Andrew. (Jane makes coffee and Andrew makes tea.) Andrew also makes ebook formatted versions of Jane’s Zenoss guides (for which the author is quite thankful).

Jane is the author of the definitive guide to event management in Zenoss 4(provide link), and provides training on administering and developing on Zenoss.
